July 2, 2008:
We made it out for about an hour in the evening. The bay had quite a few other sailboats all taking advantage of the rainless skies.
July 5, 2008:
Went out for about an hour. My wife didn’t go since she had a sinus headache, so my son and my brother-from-another-mother Jody, along with his two kids (son and daughter), went out. Jody’s son (lives in Orlando with Jody’s ex-wife) doesn’t boat much and had never been on a sailboat. The weather report claimed the bay was flat and only about 3-5 knot winds, which is perfect for poking along with kids aboard. Well the weather report was wrong. We got out there and the bay had white caps and felt to be 15-20 knot winds with higher gusts. Jody’s son got sea-sick from the heavy heeling and 1.5-2′ seas, so we turned around and headed in. When I got home, I checked the weather report again and it was reporting 20 knot winds with gust to 30 knots, so I don’t know where they got their initial data from that we relied on. At least we got out sailing if only for a short time.
July 6, 2008:
The weather report expected thunderstorms by late morning, so Carol, my son, and I decided to go sailing for an hour or two early on. We headed out about 9am and it was perfect. By 11am we were still enjoying the day and decided the weather still looked good and Ch 2 on the VHF wasn’t reporting anything new. We finally headed in about 2pm when the weather report mentioned thunderstorms brewing in the area and we made it in just as the wind was picking up considerably. The rain came down as I was securing the hatch boards and heading home. So it was a good 5 hour sail.
I hope the weather looks good this coming weekend, because we really hope to sail over to the beach to watch the air show.
